About the LACC

The Los Angels Consular Corps has one of the largest memberships in the world.  The Corps consists of 101 consulates (62 career and 39 honorary) many of which also have trade, consular and tourism representatives based in Los Angeles.

Career consular officers are appointed by their Head of State or Foreign Minister and are full-time representatives of their government.  Honorary Consuls are either United States citizens or nationals of countries they represent who permanently reside in Los Angeles.  Honorary Consuls are generally assigned to provide a degree of consular representation in places not covered by career consular officers.  All career and honorary consular officials are accredited by the U.S. Department of State.

The Consular Corps also has fourteen Emeritus Members.  The honorary title "Emeritus Member, Los Angles Consular Corps” is bestowed on any former member of the Consular Corps who has made a significant contribution while serving as an active member.

Historically, the Los Angeles Corps is relatively young with most countries having only opened consulates in the last forty years.  Despite its relative youth, diplomatic activity has been ongoing since the El Pueblo de le Reina de Los Angeles was founded in 1781.  In 1883, journals recorded representatives of General Washington meeting with Spanish settlers in the Pueblo.  The first Mexican Independence Day celebration was also held in Los Angeles in 1845.

Today, the Consular Corps serves to build and strengthen its relationship with both the City and the wider County of Los Angeles.  Having within its boundaries two of the largest ports in the United States and the third largest airport, as well as some of the finest universities and research facilities to be found anywhere, its fully anticipated that the Corps will continue to grow and prosper.
